Types of Ropes Courses

"The brave is not he who knows no fear – it is he that knows his fears and overcomes them." Khalil Gibran

Although at a glance Ropes Courses often look the same, there are in fact several quite different types of Ropes Courses, depending not only on their location and building methods, but specifically their usage. The main two categories are differentiated by their use and are:

  • Classical High Ropes Courses
  • Adventure Parks

Classical High Ropes Courses are used predominantly in Experiential-education programmes, or for the holding of Events. Due to their ability to be utilised for “team activities” it has many more uses and appeals to many diverse groups, from school groups to businesses. The design does not allow for the use by individuals, as the Safety system is too high, and is used by people working in pairs (or more), securing each other over a “Top-rope” system. The intention of “classical High ropes Courses” is to develop inner qualities, either within the individual, or between members of a group. Participation is a personal choice, will never be forced on anyone. Of course, it is intended to have fun, similar to Adventure Parks.

Adventure Parks have grown hugely popular in the leisure industry, and are primarily about challenging the participants and having fun.
Their target group are primarily youth, but they are suitable for the whole family, nana and granddad as well. (Some people over 80 years old have completed Adventure Parks). For young or old who search for thrills, and challenges, there is something for everyone.
Participants to Adventure Parks are only responsible for operating their own safety system, no-one else’s. Because of the obvious risk this system poses for young children, it is stated in EN 15567:2 that children may only climb in Adventure Parks from 8 years old, if it has a continuous safety-system. If the adventure climbing park does not have a continuous safety-system, 8-10 years old may only participate if they are accompanied by an adult. According to Developmental-psychology, children this young may be at risk to themselves, not only through fatigue, but due to their inability to comprehend the risks associated with making mistakes with the safety system.

Typical use of a “classical” High Ropes Course.

Outdoor Trainings

Personal border can be challenged, and overcome, maybe even removed, when participating in classical High Ropes Course activities. They build self-confidence, trust in others and team capability. Social interaction can be vastly improved in a High Ropes Course. For Outdoor trainings High Ropes Courses are optimal.

Experiential-Educational theory for youth and school classes

Many different institutions use our know-how and regularly use our High Ropes Course with their students. The pupils learn to improve their communication and cooperation skills, and to develop their self-confidence. The class bond is strengthened, and outsiders reintegrated. Teachers and pupils get to know each other better and develop broader perspectives. A High Ropes Course can be used as a foundation block for any Experiential-Education programme

Therapeutic applications

We work closely together with medical centres, like the Panorama Clinic (psycho-somatic illnesses) in Scheidegg, the “Haus zur Sonne” Health Centre, helping them with their clients by offering programmes in our High Ropes Course as a therapeutic instrument. The proven link between mind and body is the foundation of therapies that address psycho-somatic illness, such as phobias, eating-disorders and depression-linked conditions. The motto "move into the fear" is consistent with Behavioural Therapists fundamental belief that fears can be overcome by confronting them.
Dr. Kilian W. Flour published the results of an interesting study titled “Experience-oriented learning in Psychotherapy”, which confirms the sense and worth of using a High Ropes Course as effective instrument in Psychotherapy.

Hotel and Conference Centres

Many hotels already use the advantages of High Ropes Courses. Conference Centres can offer efficient new training measures to their seminar participants as simply fun, team work or challenges and thrills.
Contact our office for detailed information about the range of Events that we can provide to best suit your conference theme, participants and desired outcomes.
